The trademarks concerned are the following:
- The word mark “GODOT” in any form of the word that is used
- The word mark “GODOT ENGINE” in any form of the word that is used
- The word mark “GODOT FOUNDATION” in any form of the word that is used

The GODOT trademark, the GODOT ENGINE trademark and the GODOT logo are hereafter referred to as “the Godot trademarks”. The GODOT FOUNDATION trademark has a specific status, as it should only be used in connection with activities of the Godot Foundation.
The Godot Foundation wishes to be permissive in granting rights of use of the GODOT trademark, the GODOT ENGINE trademark and the GODOT logo to persons and legal entities that are using or contributing to the Godot Software (as it is currently available in the repositories hosted under https://github.com/godotengine).
However, the Godot Foundation also wishes to protect the community of Godot users and contributors, as well as the Godot Project as a whole, from harm that would be caused by uses of the Godot name and reputation in contexts that go against its core values as set out in the Godot Ecosystem Policy (https://godot.foundation/policies-and-procedures/ecosystem-vision-statement) and Godot Code of Conduct (https://godotengine.org/code-of-conduct).
When can you use the trademarks?
The Godot Foundation hereby grants a non-exclusive, royalty-free, non-sublicensable, non-transferable and worldwide license for the use of the GODOT trademark, the GODOT ENGINE trademark and the GODOT Logo, subject to strict compliance with all the terms described in this Policy and License, to:
-
any person or legal entity using the GODOT Software, in accordance with the software’s license, for the sole purpose of conveying the message that it is using the GODOT Software (e.g. a game or app “made with GODOT ENGINE”);
-
any person or legal entity making, offering or selling products or services that can be used in association with the GODOT Software, for the sole purpose of conveying the message that such products or services can be used with the GODOT Software (e.g. tutorials or training programs “about the GODOT ENGINE”, plugins and addons “made for the GODOT ENGINE”);
-
any person or legal entity organizing or participating in events or publications that are directly related to the GODOT Software, for the sole purpose of describing, commenting, expressing opinions about the Godot Software and referring to the Godot Software (e.g. a blog post “about the GODOT ENGINE”);
-
any person wishing to display the GODOT trademark, the GODOT ENGINE trademark or the GODOT Logo on t-shirts, hats, mugs and other merchandise or goodies for their personal use or for use by a small group of Godot community members (as long as they are not sold). In these four situations, which are directly related to the use of the GODOT software and the GODOT community, no further steps are necessary to benefit from the license, other than complying with all the requirements described in this Policy and License.
In any other situation or context, the use of the GODOT trademark, the GODOT ENGINE trademark and the GODOT Logo must be explicitly authorized in writing by the Godot Foundation, which can be contacted under [email protected] to that effect. For the sake of clarity, the license that is hereby granted does not concern the GODOT FOUNDATION trademark.
When can you NOT use the trademarks?
The GODOT FOUNDATION trademark can only be used by the Godot Foundation or with the explicit written approval of the Godot Foundation.
The GODOT trademark, the GODOT ENGINE trademark and the GODOT Logo are registered and protected by applicable laws and, therefore, any use that is not authorized either automatically under the above section “When can you use the trademarks?” or through an explicit written license granted by the Godot Foundation, is prohibited.
The Godot Foundation will be particularly vigilant as concerns situations in which it considers that the use of the Godot Trademarks may harm the Godot community of users or contributors and go against its core values as set out in the Godot Code of Conduct and Godot Ecosystem Policy. It is, for example, strictly prohibited to:
- use the trademarks as a name for a commercial game engine (including a commercial fork of the Godot Software) without a custom license from the Godot Foundation ;
- use the trademarks in the name of a corporate entity or trading name (e.g. creating a company called “Godot Software”). By exception, using the “Godot” trademark in the corporate name of a not-for-profit organisation organizing local events around the Godot Project (e.g. local Godot meetups) is allowed.
The Godot Foundation may also withdraw, at any time, any license allowing the use of the Godot Trademarks if it finds that such use may harm the Godot community of users or contributors and go against its core values as set out in the Godot Code of Conduct and Godot Ecosystem Policy.
How should you use the trademarks?
All Godot Trademarks must be used in such way that:
-
their use does not violate and does not happen in a context that violates the Godot Code of Conduct and Godot Ecosystem Policy;
-
it must be clear at all times that you and your use of the Godot Trademarks and the context in which you use the trademarks is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Godot Foundation without the latter’s prior written consent;
For the sake of clarity, using the Godot Trademarks in the splash screen of your game or in your credits section is not violating this rule. However, outside of this particular situation, we recommend including the following disclaimer on your website or product / service description: “<Your brand/company name> is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Godot Foundation. <Your brand/company name> uses the GODOT® name and logos under a permissive license granted by the Godot Foundation”. Inclusion of this statement is not a hard requirement but it is useful in ensuring you do not break this policy by mistake, in a given context.
Using the GODOT and GODOT ENGINE trademarks is allowed only under the following conditions:
-
you cannot use these trademarks in isolation. This means that there must be a context around the trademarks indicating what you are using them for, in such way as to avoid giving the impression that your activity is endorsed or “officially approved” by the Godot Foundation or the Godot community.
-
you can use the GODOT word mark in the name of a website, project, product, service or initiative directly related to GODOT, as long as it is also named with a word that describes its purpose (e.g. “the GODOT Scene Optimizer” is an allowable name for a third party tool that optimizes GODOT scenes.)
Using the GODOT Logo is allowed only under the following conditions:
-
the Godot Foundation reserves the exclusive right to use the GODOT logo as a logo (so, unlike the word trademarks, you can’t use it, including a derivative, as the logo for any website, project, service, initiative, company, etc. You must devise your own logo). For example, using the GODOT logo for your new game engine, “Go-Don’t”, is not allowed, but using the logo as an asset in your game “Run GODOT Run” is allowed.
-
The GODOT logo can be used to make references to the GODOT ENGINE or the GODOT Project, in contexts that are allowed under this Policy and License. For example, placing the logo in the splash screen of your game is allowed and encouraged. Feel free to also make a derivative of the logo that fits your game for the splash screen, “Sega Genesis” style.
Miscellaneous
While our goal is to be permissive in allowing the use of the GODOT trademarks, we reserve the right to terminate your use of it at any time if we believe the above conditions are not met or if any of the terms of this Policy and License are breached. If you have any questions about the permitted use of the GODOT logo or if any further permissions are required, please contact us at [email protected] to ensure compliance with this Policy and License.
The license that is granted under this Policy and License, as described under the section “When can you use the trademarks?” and subject to the conditions set out in the section “How should you use the trademarks?” is governed by the following legal terms:
- the license does not entitle its holder to register a trademark, design or tradename, which would include the Godot Trademarks;
- the Godot Foundation does not provide any warranty and makes no representation that the use of the Godot Trademarks will not infringe the rights of any third party and all warranties and representations, whether statutory or otherwise, express or implied, are hereby excluded to the fullest extent permitted by law;

- the license holder commits not to challenge the ownership of the Godot Trademarks anywhere in the world or claim any rights of ownership over them anywhere in the world;
- the license holder accepts that the Godot Foundation shall not have any obligation to mediate, resolve, or otherwise involve itself or become involved in any dispute involving the Godot Trademarks including, without limitation, any disputes between the license holder and third parties or any other license holders;
- the license holder agrees to indemnify and hold harmless the Godot Foundation and its representatives against any claims, liabilities, actions, loss, damage or cost (including all legal fees and costs on a full indemnity basis) arising out of or in connection with any disputes relating to his use of the Godot Trademarks ;
- the license shall be governed by the laws of the Netherlands and any dispute regarding the license and the right to use the Godot Trademarks shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the relevant courts of Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
This Policy and License, including the list of conditions for use of the GODOT trademarks may change at any time. Please refer to our website (https://godot.foundation/policies-and-procedures/trademark-policy/) for the most up to date version.
